More than half of all villas in the Danube metropolis of Vienna are located in the 18th and 19th districts. This fact naturally attracts many burglars. Because, as is well known, where the rich live, there is a lot to steal. This assumption actually proved fatal for one villa owner. On the night of March 5 to 6, 1995, the villa of 55-year-old architect’s widow Margareta Wolf on Pötzleinsdorfer Höhe in Vienna’s 18th district, Währing, was broken into, and she was shot dead in cold blood by the burglar, along with her dog. A total of four bullets from a submachine gun were found in her body when the police found her in her villa. It was clearly a robbery-murder, as five paintings, a grandfather clock, jewelry, savings books, and a VCR were missing. Who could have killed the elderly lady so cruelly? Shortly after the robbery and murder, some of the stolen items were found in a suitcase hidden in the Neustift cemetery. But there was no trace of the thief. Three and a half years passed before detectives from the Brigittenau district police station received a decisive lead on the villa murderer during a series of burglaries. This led to 31-year-old Hungarian Tibor Vrancsik, who was arrested on December 20, 1998, on the Orient Express while entering Austria. During police questioning, he initially denied murdering the architect’s widow, but eventually confessed to shooting her. In a jury trial at the Vienna Regional Court, Tibor Vrancsik was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Margareta Wolf.
