The story of Céline Lesage is one of those tales that takes your breath away. Between 2000 and 2007, Céline Lesage killed six of her newborn babies, whose bodies she put in garbage bags and left to rot in the basement. But how could it have come to this, that Céline not only secretly carried her pregnancies to term, but also killed her own babies, casting a dark light on the subject of maternal love and crime? Lesage was responsible for the birth of her children between 2000 and 2007, but the circumstances under which these babies were born are more than just tragic; they are shocking. At a time when the world looks forward to the beauty of new beginnings, these little lives were extinguished by the hands of their own mother, earning her the nickname “Killer Mom” in the media. Four of the babies were suffocated by Céline placing her hand over their mouths, while two babies who fought back fiercely were strangled with a thin cord. It is difficult to comprehend how a mother, who is normally considered the protector of her children, is capable of such a crime. The story begins in 2007, when her new boyfriend, Luc Margueritte, went to the basement of the apartment in Valognes that he shared with Lesage on October 19. There he found the decomposed bodies of six babies, including the body of his own child, which he knew nothing about, leading to one of the most heinous murder cases in French criminal history. The discovery was so disturbing that it made headlines nationwide and plunged the nation into fear and horror. How could it have come to this? Lesage’s life up to that point had not been without problems. She had a difficult childhood and struggled with issues that many consider taboo. There was much speculation about her mental health, and experts debated what role it might have played in her actions. Did she truly understand the responsibility for her actions? Was she capable of comprehending the implications of her actions? These questions remained even after her sentencing. Céline herself stated that she had been abused by her ex-partner, 39-year-old plumber Pascal Catherine, with whom she had a teenage son. For these reasons, she concealed her five pregnancies from him. In the course of the investigation, Pascal Catherine was also charged in 2007, but he was acquitted of any wrongdoing, as no “domineering attitude” could be proven. In 2010, Céline Lesage was finally charged with the murder of her six babies and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Céline herself admitted to murdering her babies, but was unable to explain why she had killed them. During the trial at the court in the northern French town of Coutances, many people were deeply moved and horrified by the actions of a woman who had always wanted to be a good listener and a sympathetic figure. Her case sparked intense debate about motherhood, mental illness, and the legal system. The Lesage case is not the only one of its kind, but it stands out for its cruelty and the circumstances that led to it. Many people are wondering what this means for society. Is it a sign that we as a society are not paying enough attention to the needs of pregnant women and mothers? Or was Lesage’s behavior simply incomprehensible, an example of the extreme depths of the human psyche? While Lesage sits behind bars, the question remains: what will become of all the memories and grief her actions have left behind? The case casts a shadow over the idea of the sacred bond between mother and child and reminds us that evil is sometimes very close at hand. But there is also another side to the story – the support of professionals who should offer help before it is too late. Perhaps it is time we started to pay even more attention to the mental health of parents, especially single mothers. Overall, the story of Céline Lesage shows us how complicated and multi-layered the issues of love, hate, and the human psyche are. It is a dark chapter that should remind us to be attentive to what happens behind closed doors.
