Nowadays, you don’t need a gun, a balaclava, or a safe-cracker to rob a bank. What Bonnie & Clyde, one of the most legendary bank robbery duos in criminal history, once were, intelligent hackers are today. All they need is a laptop or computer to steal $1 billion from a bank. This impressive sum has been stolen since 2013 by the so-called Carbanak gang, an international organization of cybercriminals from Russia, Ukraine, parts of Europe, and China, who simply sent emails with attachments to bank employees. As soon as the bank employees opened these so-called spear phishing emails, their computers were infected with the Carbanak malware. This gave the cyber gangsters access to the bank’s internal network and allowed them to control everything. This enabled them to transfer money to their accounts in China or America or to withdraw cash. The smart gang hacked their way through the computer systems of more than 100 financial institutions in over 30 countries over a period of two years. According to IT security company Kaspersky, they stole a total of up to $1 billion through hacks and online break-ins at banks. Mobile phones have become a popular target for cybercriminals, as they are often used for payments. To do this, they often create a copy of an app such as the Google Play Store, which prompts the user to update their data. As soon as they do so, the malicious software is installed and the digital bank robbery can begin. Modern technology makes this possible.
