In the westernmost tip of the Federal Republic of Germany, on the border with the Netherlands, a gruesome murder took place involving two Iraqis whose bodies were dissolved in barrels of hydrochloric acid. Responsible for this was the Dutch L. family, consisting of the head of the family, Huub, his wife Els, their sons Michele and Maurice, and their daughter Rachelle from Sittard in the Dutch province of Limburg, who lived in Tüddern in North Rhine-Westphalia from 2002 to 2010 in a house where they committed the murders. In the summer of 2009, they slit the throat of 24-year-old Alan G. Two years later, in August 2011, they shot and dismembered 29-year-old Mohammed al-J., both of whom were living in the Netherlands as asylum seekers. To dispose of the bodies of the two men, they drove to their friend Ron V., who lived in the Belgian town of Gellik. In the basement of his house, they placed the bodies in barrels of hydrochloric acid to cover up the murders, but remains were later found. The police caught on to the family’s scheme thanks to tips from third parties who claimed that the missing Mohammed al-J. had been killed in the L. family’s house in Tüddern. A special task force then searched the house and arrested the wife, Els, and her two sons. Mohammed al-J. was a car dealer with a criminal record for violations of the Narcotics Act who was friends with the L. family’s daughter, Rachelle. He had learned of the L. family’s criminal drug dealings and blackmailed them, which is why he was killed. During the police investigation, the police came across Alan G., who had been missing for three years and who had also had contact with the L. family. He is said to have raped one of the two sons, which is why he was eliminated. Since the arrest of Els and her two sons, her husband Huub had been on the run with their daughter Rachelle, who had been wanted on an international arrest warrant ever since. In June 2012, Huub L. was arrested in Spain and extradited to Germany. In the first trial in the summer of 2013, his wife Els L. was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Maastricht court for the murders of the two men. The two sons were sentenced to 30 and 26 months in prison, respectively, for aiding and abetting. The head of the family, Huub L., and their daughter Rachelle were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The public prosecutor’s office appealed against Huub L.’s sentence and demanded a 15-year prison sentence in the appeal proceedings before the court in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, as he was alleged to have played a decisive role in the murders. However, the public prosecutor’s office was unable to prove this.
