To this day, the murder of Ilona Meiss remains one of Germany’s most intriguing cold cases. Ilona Meiss, 20, who was training at a bank in Frankfurt, lived in a basement apartment on Adelhartstraße in the Ober-Eschbach district of Bad Homburg. Her parents also had an apartment in the same building. On September 18, 1985, Ilona had stayed at her parents’ apartment until 11 p.m. The next morning, her father Ernst Meiss discovered that a grate had been lifted and a window pane broken in the basement. Filled with concern, he went to his daughter’s basement apartment, where he found her lying dead in her bed. The autopsy revealed that Ilona had been strangled with a parcel string. The perpetrator had entered the apartment through her bathroom window and murdered Ilona while she was asleep. The criminal investigation department worked flat out. Both the residents of the building and friends and workers at a nearby construction site were investigated. But the criminal investigation department was completely in the dark as to who had murdered Ilona Meiss. After 30 years, the Bad Homburg criminal investigation department reopened the unsolved case. It was featured on the Hessischer Rundfunk radio station’s Kriminalreport program on January 25, 2015. The criminal investigation department hoped to receive tips from the public. They also wanted to find Ilona’s murderer with the help of DNA testing. To this end, the police wrote to over 450 men, asking them to provide a saliva sample. These were men who were between 18 and 30 years old at the time and lived not far from the crime scene. However, the mass testing did not yield the hoped-for results. To this day, Ilona’s killer has not been found, and the murder of Ilona Meiss will probably remain unsolved forever.
