The murder of 69-year-old Camille Kolbert was a crime worthy of a crime thriller and marked a first in Luxembourg’s judicial history. On November 1, 2010, All Saints’ Day, he was found dead in his bed by family members in his home on Rue Killebierg in the small town of Hassel in southern Luxembourg. Camille Kolbert had been killed with an axe, which the perpetrator had then cleaned in the bathtub. At the scene of the crime, the police found a Bible with a kitchen knife stuck in it and the word “pédofile” (pedophile) written on it. Was this a clue to the motive for the crime, or was it intended to deliberately mislead the police? Otherwise, there were no clues at the scene of the crime that pointed to Camille Kolbert’s murderer. Then a hot lead pointed to Camille’s former partner, 47-year-old Pascal T., whom Camille had adopted after the relationship ended. Together with his new partner, 40-year-old Jérémy B., he had allegedly hired hitman Charles-Edourd C. to murder Camille Kolbert in order to get his hands on Camille’s inheritance. In March 2011, the police arrested Pascal and his friend in Versailles, France. The alleged killer, Charles-Edourd, was also arrested by the police. Despite the fact that the trio protested their innocence, they were sentenced to life imprisonment by the judge of the Luxembourg Criminal Chamber on January 22, 2014. The appeal proceedings caused a sensation when all three defendants were acquitted on March 10, 2015. The circumstantial evidence was not sufficient to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the trio had murdered Camille Kolbert. All three men were released after four years in prison. This second verdict, from life imprisonment to acquittal, was unprecedented in the history of Luxembourg’s judiciary.
